Name of Point Where Meridian Zero Intersects with Equator,  has now been named “Anker’s Point”.<\/em> (please note the spelling).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In connection with my work on a new maritime dictionary I have ascertained that the point where the equator intersects with meridian zero in the Atlantic Ocean has no name.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 Even though the point has been the starting point for all navigation for several hundred years, the position of the ship was and still is given according to how many degrees it is north or south of the equator and how many degrees it is east or west of zero meridian which runs through Greenwich.  This important point ought to have a name, and it has now got that. <\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feel a point of this importance should have a name. Those I have been in contact with so far are of the same opinion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Below you will find the development of my investigations and the reasons for my choice of name:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.     <\/strong>The Point Has No Name:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.1    <\/strong>The Danish Language Council (Dansk Sprogn\u00e6vn) was the first organization I contacted. They informed me that according to their investigation the point had no name and that this surprised them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.2     <\/strong>The National Survey and Cadastre (Kort & Matrikelsyrelsen) informed me by e-mail <\/strong>SOE@kms.dk <\/strong><\/a>that they were of the opinion that the point did not have a name.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.3     <\/strong>An e-mail from Copenhagen University (K\u00f8benhavns Universitet) Geography & Geology <\/strong>Hbm@geogr.ku.dk <\/a> <\/strong> informed me that the point did not have an official name. The university was wondering why the point had not been given a name.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.4     <\/strong>An e-mail from The Royal Danish Embassy in Ghana, <\/strong>camchr@um.dk <\/strong><\/a>  informed me that the Embassy had investigated the matter and  been in contact with Mr. Foster Mensah, who is connected to the Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services (CERSGIS), university of Ghana, he also had no knowledge of a name for this point. The Embassy found my pursuit of trying to obtain a name for this point interesting and my choice of name for it excellent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.5     <\/strong>An e-mail from Troels Kloevedal, <\/strong>troelskloevedal@yahoo.com <\/strong><\/a>, did not give a name for this point either. This man was one of the best known global navigators.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.       <\/strong>How Does a Point Get a Name?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.1     <\/strong>On contacting the National Survey and Cadastre (Kort & Matrikelsyrelsen), mail <\/strong>SOE@kms.dk <\/strong><\/a>  , I was informed that there are strict rules on how objects in international waters are named. The organization dealing with this is IHO (International Hydrographic Organization). A private person must complete the required standard forms and send them to the Danish Maritime Administration (\u201cFarvandsvaesnet\u201d) who will then pass the application on to IHO.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2     <\/strong>I completed the forms and sent them to the Danish Maritime Administration (\u201cFarvandsvaesnet\u201d). A week later they informed me via e-mail LHA@frv.dk  that when an unnamed point is involved then your goodselves, UNGEGN, are the organization to contact and not IHO.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.3    The United Nation of Experts on Geographical Names was then contacted. Their email reply came from ChairUNGEGN, Pr\u00e8sidente du GENUNG Helen Kerfoot <\/strong>Helen.Kerfoot@NRCan-RNCan.gc.ca<\/a>    <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ms. Helen Kerfoot (email) stating that they were not in the position to make such a decision. They wrote:\u201dalthough I would doubt that there is any process for formally naming grid points on the spherical coordinate system!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Ms. Helen Kerfoot was so kind to put me into contact with Senior Lecturer Mr. Peder Gammeltoft with the Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Copenhagen and Chair of the Nordic Division of UNGEGN. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Senior Lecturer Mr. Peder Gammeltoft at the Copenhagen University has been investigating this matter for another 2, 5 month he has now reached the same conclusion as Ms. Helen Kerfoot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My suggestion for the name of this point is “Anker’s Point”<\/em><\/strong><\/em> (please note the spelling) and my reasons for this choice are as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(A)    <\/strong>This point is basis for determining any point on our planet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(B)    <\/strong>The name ought to relate to something maritime. The anchoring of ship seems a fitting symbol.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

(C)    <\/strong>The name `Anker` is the Danish word for the English word `anchor ` and happens to be the name of the person who first realized that this important point has no name and he has been moving force to get a name for it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As no one seems to be able to decide what a given point of this nature could be called \u2013 any one can make that decision. And as stated I have decided that this particular point where the Meridian Zero Intersects with Equator, <\/em>should be named “Anker’s Point”<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/strong> (please note the spelling).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would like to emphasize my gratefulness towards all the help and effort I have received throughout this investigation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 For the sake of good order I informed in 2017 the following institutions of the naming of “Anker’s Point”<\/em><\/strong>:  The IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) Secretariat by Mr. Robert WARD, Mr. Mustafa IPTES and Mr. Gilleies BESSERO, and the Royal Museums Greenwich.  None of them had any objections but wished me well with my investigations.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you can see, the naming and choice of name have been thoroughly investigated and endorsed. <\/strong> Yours sincerely,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I forbindelse med mit arbejde p\u00e5 et nyt maritimt leksikon, undrede jeg mig over, hvad punktet hedder, hvor \u00e6kvator krydser nul meridianen i Atlanterhavet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selvom punktet i flere hundrede \u00e5r har v\u00e6ret udgangspunktet for al stedbestemmelse p\u00e5 vor jord. Skibenes position blev og bliver opgivet, som hvor mange grader man er nord  eller syd for \u00e6kvator og hvor mange grader man er \u00f8st eller vest for nulmeridianen, der g\u00e5r gennem Greenwich. S\u00e5 dette vigtige punkt burde have et navn, s\u00e5 det har det f\u00e5et nu.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jeg mener, s\u00e5dan et vigtigt punkt b\u00f8r have et navn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alle jeg har haft kontakt med, er af samme mening, og de finder min ide god.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Punktet havde intet navn:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.1 Dansk Sprogn\u00e6vn var de f\u00f8rste jeg kontaktede, de mente ikke punktet havde noget navn. Efter at de havde unders\u00f8gt sagen, kunne de oplyse, at punktet intet navn havde efter deres mening, og at de undrede sig herover.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.2 Kort- og Matrikelstyrelsen oplyste i en mail, <\/strong>SOE@kms.dk <\/strong><\/a>at de ikke mente at punktet havde noget navn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.3 En mail fra K\u00f8benhavns Universitets Geography & Geology Instut, <\/strong>Hbm@geogr.ku.dk <\/strong><\/a>oplyste at punktet intet officielt navn har. Universitet undrede sig over, at man ikke havde givet punktet et navn. S\u00e5 det pr\u00f8ver jeg, med deres hj\u00e6lp, at g\u00f8re noget ved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.4 En mail fra vor ambassade i Ghana, <\/strong>camchr@um.dk <\/strong><\/a>  oplyser, at ambassaden har unders\u00f8gt sagen og v\u00e6ret i kontakt med Mr. Foster Mensah, der er tilknyttet Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Services (CERSGIS), University of Ghana, han kender heller ikke til, at punktet har et navn. Ambassaden fandt min ide sp\u00e6ndene, interessant og navnevalget glimrende.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.5 En mail fra en af de kendteste jordomsejlere Troels Kl\u00f8vedal <\/strong>troelskloevedal@yahoo.com <\/strong><\/a>, gav heller ikke noget navn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Hvordan f\u00e5r et punkt et navn?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.1 Ved henvendelse til Kort og Matrikelstyrelsen, mail <\/strong>SOE@kms.dk <\/strong><\/a>, fik jeg oplyst, at der var helt faste retningslinjer, n\u00e5r man \u00f8nskede at navngive et objekt i internationalt farvand. De oplyste, at det var IHO (International Hydrographic Organization), der tog sig heraf. En privat person skulle udfylde nogle standard skemaer og sende dem til \u201dFarvandsv\u00e6senet\u201d, der s\u00e5 ville videre sende ans\u00f8gningen til IHO.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.2 Skemaerne blev udfyldt og sendt til \u201dFarvandsv\u00e6senet\u201d. Efter en uges tid meddelte \u201dFarvandsv\u00e6senet\u201d.  via mail <\/strong>LHA@frv.dk <\/strong><\/a>, at n\u00e5r det drejede sig om et fiktivt punkt, s\u00e5 var det ikke IHO man skulle sp\u00f8rge.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

De henviste mig til FN`s ekspertgruppe for geografiske navne, UNGEGN.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.3 FN`s ekspertgruppe for geografiske navne blev kontaktet. <\/strong>En mail fra Chair damen for FN`s ekspertgruppe fru  Helen Kerfoot skrev:\u201dalthough I would doubt that there is any process for formally naming gride point on the spherical coordinate system.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imidlertid var fru Helen Kerfoot s\u00e5 venlig at s\u00e6tte mig I kontakt med senior lektor Peder Gammeltoft ved \u201dAfdelingen for Skandinaviske Studier\u201d  ved K\u00f8benhavns Universitet. Han er chairman for den nordiske afdeling af FN`s ekspertgruppe for geografiske navne.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Efter at senior lektor Peder Gammeltoft ved K\u00f8benhavns Universitet har efterkontrolleret Helen Kerfoots oplysning i 2\u00bd m\u00e5ned, er han kommet til den samme konklusion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Begrundelse for valg af navnet\u00a0\u201dAnker’s Point” <\/em>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.1 Punktet er grundl\u00e6ggende for al stedbestemmelse p\u00e5 vor f\u00e6lles jord.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.2 Navnet b\u00f8r relateres til noget, hele verden forbinder med noget maritimt, nemlig et anker.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        At ankre et skib f\u00f8les som noget symbolsk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.3 Navnet kunne samtidig henvise til den person, der f\u00f8rst undrede sig over at punktet intet navn havde, og gjorde noget for, at det fik et navn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Da der ikke er nogen regler for, hvordan et punkt af denne type f\u00e5r et navn, kan enhver tage denne bestemmelse. S\u00e5 nu har jeg bestemt, at punktet, hvor \u00e6kvator krydser nul meridianen i Atlanterhavet hedder\u00a0“Anker’s<\/em><\/strong> Point<\/em>\u201d.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For god ordens skyld, informerede jeg i 2017 \u00a0f\u00f8lgende institutter om navngivningen af\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0“Anker’s<\/em><\/strong> Point\u201d<\/em><\/strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0IHO (International Hydrographic Organization) Sekretariat ved Mr. Robert WARD, Mr. Mustafa IPTES og Mr. Gilleies BESSERO, og the Royal Museums Greenwich. \u00a0Ingen af dem havde noget at indvende, men \u00f8nsker mig alt godt med min unders\u00f8gelse.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Som De kan se, er valget af navnet blevet grundigt unders\u00f8gt og godkendt.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

S\u00e5 navnet er nu\u00a0\u00a0“Anker’s<\/em><\/strong> Point\u201d<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
